Drupal

Drupal

Drupal is a free modular content management framework, content management system and blogging engine which was originally written by Dries Buytaert as a bulletin board system. Today, it is used by many high-traffic websites, including The Onion, Spread Firefox (Glaxstar, see below), Ourmedia, KernelTrap, and the Defective by Design campaign. It is particularly popular for building online communities, and has the tag line "Community plumbing". Drupal is written in PHP. As of January 29, 2007, the current version was 5.1.

Linspire

Linspire

Linspire, previously known as LindowsOS (also Lin---s, pronounced Lindash), is a commercial Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. Linspire is published by Linspire, Inc. and is focused on ease-of-use for the average person, rather than catering to niche or advanced needs. As of April 21, 2006, the most recent stable release of Linspire is version 5.1.427 (Linspire Five-O).[1] Linspire is available in two editions. The basic retail edition costs US$49.95 and the "CNR Edition" $89.95, which includes a one year subscription to the CNR Gold service.

gNewSense

gNewSense

gNewSense is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu aiming to provide a distribution consisting entirely of free software. It was designed for users who wish to only use free software, that is: software that is freely usable, modifiable, and distributable without any license restrictions. It is officially supported by the Free Software Foundation[1] and is one of several completely free software distributions recommended by the organization. Version 1.1 was released on January 22, 2007.
Despite being based on Ubuntu it has many differences:
Non-free firmware removed from the Linux kernel
Non-free software repositories are not available - such as Ubuntu's "restricted" and "multiverse" repositories
Non-free documentation and artwork removed
The "Universe" package repository is enabled by default
Mozilla Firefox is rebranded as BurningDog, to avoid certain trademark issues that stem from modification of the software to remove functionality suggesting non-free plugins.[2] A similar situation motivated the rebranding of Firefox as Iceweasel in the Gnuzilla and Debian projects.
build-essential (software development tools such as gcc, make etc.) installed by default
bsdgames, nethack and GNU Emacs are installed by default
gNewSense is available only for the Intel 386 platform, is as of version 1.1 (DeltaD) based on the Dapper/6.06 LTS release of Ubuntu,[3] and as with other Ubuntu distributions is installed from a LiveCD. The removal of non-free firmware from the kernel means that some devices such as certain wireless cards will not work as there are no free software alternatives available.

Sabayon

Sabayon

SabayonLinux or Sabayon Linux, (formerly known as RR4 Linux/RR64 Linux), is a Gentoo-based Linux operating system created by Fabio Erculiani ("lxnay").

abayon differs from Gentoo in that instead of installing the entire system from source code, the initial install is made using packages which are pre-compiled and bundled with the source code. Sabayon currently supports the x86 and x86-64 platforms.
Sabayon uses the Portage system from Gentoo for package management, meaning that all updates and base characteristics are in sync with Gentoo's portage tree and other mechanisms; thus a user can follow guides and articles written for Gentoo users. However, "world updates" are discouraged for beginners or those new to the parent distribution, as the structure is a little different and requires a slightly different method of execution. A guide has been written by a Sabayon developer on how to do global updates and recompilation of all packages.
The Sabayon developers are currently working on an infant project called "Entropy", which will take a different approach to managing packages. Among the early highlights is a binary package installer utility/script "binmerge", which shipped with the 3.3 miniEdition. binmerge sits atop Portage's native "emerge" utility and uses Sabayon's pool of binary packages to install them. A simple "binmerge application-x" instead of "emerge application-x" will fetch that package from the community's repository. This would eliminate compiling entirely for those who prefer not to do so, provided their application has been compiled for the pool. The script appears to leverage several Portage features such as the "BINHOST" feature and a number of emerge options like "--getpkg" and "--usepkgonly". The major feature is that binmerge will also be aware of dependencies, both direct and indirect, meaning complete removal of packages will no longer be a complex process for a Gentoo system.
